Oil leak in the rear end?
« on: May 04, 2005, 01:59:39 PM »
We put the SPOA lift in this weekend and now we have an oil leak in the rear end. It's leaking out of the front of the pumkin were the driveshaft connects. Why would we have a leak now? My son jacked up the back of the Sami there but that shouldn't have done it.
Is there just a seal there that needs to be replaced????

Thanks for the help in advance....
1987 stock for now Sami for my 15 year old's first vehicle.
We Wheel with a 1994 Ford Explorer 5" Superlift, 35" tires, locked in the rear, custom tire rack, sliders, misc. stuff.

if he jacked up the rear end by the pinion then it will have distorted the seal. i have not had to replace mine yet but it should be fairly straight  forward job.

if it is the pinion seal it's  not as bad as you would think just jack up the zuki pull out the axles then pull the pinion replace the seal then put it all back together or just run some rtv around the outside of the pinion and  see if it seals.

I recommend to change the seal, because that seal would injured during Spoa. Try to turn some grade the diferential. (I dont know how to say, sorry). And try to prevent the axle wrap.

What ya have ta do is take your driveshaft off the pinion, mark the nut to the pinion with a scribe so you get close on your preload, make a tool that will hold your flange and hit the nut with a socket and an air impact to take it of after taking the locking dent out of the nut with a small punch, slide the flange off pop the seal out hammer in a new one and reverse the order that you took it appart.p.s. don't forget to line up your scribe mark and reset the lock nut.

This is exactly how I'd do it too.
