16v cracked block
« on: June 21, 2023, 08:53:52 PM »
Have a 96 4dr Tracker. Its always had somewhat of a oil burning problem. Maybe a quart every 1000 miles. Long story short, I stuck a bore camera down cylinder 1 and found a long vertical crack in the cylinder wall. Runs fine. No active smoke out the tail pipe. Ive never had to add coolant. 180 compression. After reading up on it, it seems like cracked blocks are somewhat normal? Is this block junk or can it be saved? Cant find info if these motors came with sleeves from the factory, or if this crack gets worse, does it open into a water jacket? Tracker has 208k miles on it. No engine lights, doesn't over heat. I've read that if it has the common crank journal crack, machine shops wont touch it? A engine swap with something crazy wont be doable living in California. Any info or suggestions would be great. Thanks

A vertical crack in the cylinder wall is something I've never heard of before, and I find it hard to believe it's cracked and still holding compression - what's the possibility of it being a scratch?  As far as I know the G-series motors have cast iron sleeves, which my machinist has says he can replace, but other that discussing it, I haven't pursued it.
