Driver's Side Inner Axle slowly pulls out
« on: January 25, 2022, 08:00:56 AM »
I have limit straps and added a 1/2 washer to the driver's side CV Axle but the inner axle is coming out slowly after a day of wheeling.  So far I can just tap it back in but I am unsure about why it slowly pops out.  Could the C-Clip on the end get so worn it does this?   Hopefully not something in the Diff.  Any Thoughts, Ideas, or things I can try?

I plan to cycle the suspension this weekend to see if there is maybe too much droop but with the strap and spacer I am hoping not

Driver's side?  Is that left or right?

I'm guessing by inner axle you're referring to the axle shaft that the left side CV axle is bolted to, if that's correct you're the first person I've heard complain about this, it's more common to hear complaints about the right side CVs failing.

Where did you add this 1/2 washer?

As far as I know there should be a snap ring on the inner end, and whilst I've never pulled one, it's the same setup on the right side and those are a pain to get out - have you checked to make sure there is one fitted?  Be warned, it's not unusual for the ring to break when removing the right CV axle, and it's fairly easy to fish the pieces out with a magnetic pick up tool, the left side would need a longer tool and might not be so easy.

I broke cvs before that would happen...  What mods are on the front end?

It is odd and I have added limit straps to try to stop front axle problems.  Knock on wood but no problems since I've owned the Zuk on the left\passenger if looking from the front so that is awesome.  I broke many axles on the other side and now the inner is pulling out, the c-click \snap ring is good on the end of the shaft and after putting it in by hand and a couple taps with a rubber mallet it goes right back in, it started after the EDSE kit install so that is why I installed the straps thinking I may have too much droop.  Just another byproduct of fixing one thing to find another problem.  I'm re-checking it this weekend hopefully to see it as it happens if it does LOL

The picture shows it after I put it in by hand so you can see the small space between the inner axle and the diff \  banjo.  You can see the small spacer I added to try to stop this as well

Could a bad seal cause this?

I would say that's highly unlikely.

I thought not.   Hopefully this weekend changing fluids and check droop

Seems like the axle is too short and could be pulling it out.  I'll try another cv axle and see if that changes anything.  It starts coming out driving on road now so that is crazy weird

Well, shock is fine so I tapped it back in and changed the outer axle.  More to follow
