1999 Vitara Cluster not working
« on: March 09, 2020, 05:28:40 AM »
As the title states I have a 1999 Vitara. I started it yesterday and noticed my tach, speedo, and trip are not working (trip is blank but illuminated) my temperature guage is pegged to maximum (even with keyed power with the unit not running). It starts right up and runs fine. I've checked the battery, battery connections, checked the firewall for rubbed wires, checked fuses and grounds. Has anyone ran into this issue before?

Have you checked the harness to the cluster itself?  The cluster bezel is held in place by four screws, two above the cluster and two below (in the gap over the steering column), the cluster itself is secured by four more screws.

What does "even with keyed power with the unit not running" mean?  Is the ignition on or off?  Once there is ignition power the temp gauge has power to it and will "full scale" if the line to the sensor is shorted to ground.

Sorry yes as soon I have ignition power the temp guage hits maximum. I did remove the cluster last night and inspect the plugs/ harness as much as I could see. I cant find any definitive causes to my issues. This morning on my way to work I backed out of the drive way and the cluster came to life, it functioned as normal on my way to work without an issue. I suspect I have a ground issue or maybe an issue within the cluster itself.
