Cliff notes: clicky starter fix worked great for one week and then all of the sudden the starter kept cranking after starting. I had to yank the wires loose from the relay to stop it.
Full story: So I made my own clicky starter fix after ordering one from Amazon that never arrived. Anyway, I used a basic 4 prong relay from Autozone and hooked up:
87: to starter
86: to old solonoid wire
85: ground
30: battery
I think this is right based on memory. At any rate I know it was hooked up right because it started perfectly for about a week with no issues.
Today I started the truck (for probably the 4th or 5th time today) and as I was driving I noticed a strange sound from under the hood. I though maybe it was my alternator bearings as I drove a little bit of muddy offroad last night. I drove home and popped the hood. I smelled an electrical burning smell and when I shut the ignition off, the starter was still going. I quickly yanked the wires loose from the relay to stop it. I plugged the solonoid wire back into the starter and got a couple of week starts before it wouldn't start at all. I tested the battery and it is still charged fully. I guess it burned up the starter.
I haven't tested the relay yet, I'm guessing it could be defective?
Should I have gotten the relay with a fuse? Obviously yes, but why did this happen in the first place? I think I would rather just deal with a clicky starter.
I'm just trying to figure out how this happened.
