Best Axle Shaft for '92 4dr
« on: March 20, 2018, 10:20:09 AM »
I know the OEM is best even at 26 years old but does anyone have a good recommendation or experience with?

I just tried a Heri axle shaft on the driver's side and as soon as I turned left at full lock the axle popped out of the boot and ended my 4 wheel drive

Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks

RockAuto has Cardone, Surtrack\TrakMotive, and Heri - Anyone have experience with any of these?

I tried Heri and it failed so maybe the other 2 could be better?

Does anyone know the length of the OEM shaft assembly?

Also, if you are installing a new axle shaft why would you need to mark the old one and diff?  It looks to be a 3 bolt flat inner shaft that is already in the diff

Second shaft in a row that twisted or pulled out.

Anyone ever add a spacer between the inner and outer axle shafts on the driver's side?

What are you running for a lift?  And what is your frame to ground clearance under drives seat?
Anything over 2" lift without dropping the diff also is getting into high CV angle range.  While you may be able to get away with higher angles going down the road, turning compounds the angles and you are rewarded with blown out CV's.  Make or get a set of diff drop brackets that are longer than stock.  (Stock brackets are a cast a material, and will break at the weld if you try to extend them.)

It is about 4.5" with body lift and the calmini diff drop bracket. It is just odd an axle from 92' works better than a brand new axle.  My next attempt which I believe will solve the issue is a spacer between the CV and the Diff.  Maybe 1/2 in or so.  I'll post my results in any event.

I need to stop being stunned and just solve the one off lift issue

I'm not even sure how many different suspension iterations I have gone through.  More Frankenstein than any particular Maker these days as I'm sure everyone can relate to

Thanks for the reply as any opinion is appreciated and helps me go in new directions in my thinking - I'm an IT guy so I can sometimes over or under think the auto stuff

OEM CV's are stronger than new replacement CV's.  I have busted new CV's on first outing, and will only run on Used factory CV's I get from PicNPull.
If you have to pull the CV to get it to bolt together then the other side should be tough to squeeze in place.  I would just guess that Calmini has a jig for building the diff drop brackets and would have the side to side correct, but if you are forcing one side and stretching the other side I would get new brackets.  I am thinking that a 1/4" plate will shove both sides together and they aren't going to last.  (Good news is that the drivers side is much easier to change.)
