LJ80 tire questions
« on: May 22, 2017, 07:59:08 AM »
Just purchased a frame-off-restored 1979 LJ80. The vehicle is currently being shipped to me so I can't yet confirm the tire size or if those are the stock size or something else. I do know however that the company I hired to do the detailed pre-purchase inspection confirmed that the top speed was (on a good day) around 100 kms per hour.

Must be a way to get just a little more out of it in order to safely travel in the slow lane on divided highways. First of all, do the LJ series and Samurais/sidekicks/Trackers share the same rims (diameter, width and offset)? If so, knowing the answer to this question would make tire and rim shopping easier when dealing with sales staff who've never heard of an LJ80.

Second, what is the actual stock 16-inch rim width and offset? And what is the stock tire width, aspect ratio and outside diameter? My goal is to go with the same aspect ratio or taller but using a the widest tire that will still fit the rim, thereby achieving a larger diameter tire and consequently, a higher top speed. (On my Honda Fit I'm using the very common and easy-to-find 205-55-16s rather than the 195-55-16s. This gives me a true speed at an indicated 100 kms/hour of 104 kms/hr).

I'm thinking that since I've no intention of using this collector vehicle for any extreme off-roading I won't be using the suspension system's full travel on anything resembling a regular basis. My main concern is with over-size tires being too wide and making contact where they shouldn't during lock-to-lock turning.

Any info appreciated.
