Extra wide fender flares
« on: April 21, 2016, 06:54:30 AM »
I have a 1987 samurai that has Dana 44 full size jeep jx and hardly anything stock and was used for mudding and hill climbing- rock crawling before I owned it . I drive it but the wheels are basically outside of the fenders so I need 12 or so inch fender flares to cover my tires . No one can tell me the exact measurement of tires sticking out is legal in MN. but they say mine is deffinately not legal, not that I care but can't afford a $150 equipment violation every time I get pulled over. I can find 6" flares but that is only half of what I need and the 6" flares don't even look like a true 6" of coverage. Does anyone know where to find a 10 - 14 inch flare? Its 4 pieces of plastic shouldn't be this hard but give had no luck. I've been cleaning it up a little at a time and it's looking pretty decent so don't want some terrible looking hacked up flares or would just make my own . I have a friend who is a fabricator but wants to get too fancy and make them out of aluminum but want to be able to use and abuse it so definitely want plastic. Would appreciate any info on where to get very extra wide flares!!

The 6" Bushwacker fender flares are probably as large of an after market flair as you will find for the Sammy.  You could always rivet some extension length onto the 6" flairs, but if you get an accumulation of mud packed up in the flair, I'm thinking the weight of that much mud would distort the flairs or even tear them out of the fender mounts.

Fabricating some hefty metal ones with maybe some rubber extension to the outside of the metal flairs, may be your best bet for long term durability.  Besides, if you have some flairs fabricated, you can control the final appearance in order to try to blend the flairs back into the body of the Sammy, which will be no easy task.
