2002------ 4 door tracker---drifting when in 4wd
« on: April 08, 2016, 11:15:09 AM »
Trying to repair my 2002 tracker. Months ago, a large Toyota SUV moved into my lane on I25, forcing me to cross a clover leaf, diagonally. This involve jumping a 4 foot ditch.

I kept driving, and marveling at trackers, since all under the front looked normal and no sounds.

When I got home and put it in 4wd (driveway's steep) and heard a thumping or load clunks.
I found the pass side front axle was coming out of the front differential.
Got a new one, and now the Tracker drifts quickly to the right (pass side), only when in 4wd.
Toe-in seems normal, about "0", (haven't been able to get it to a shop).
Seems to me if toe-in is off, it would drift the same in 2 wheel drive.
I took everything apart yesterday. I thought the axle splines to the diff splines were too sloppy, but seems both sides are the same after I got the diff out and wiggled both sides. Also I took it apart as I may have run the diff low on oil.

Everything in the diff looks normal.

Is there something in the front drive system, if screwed up, that would make a Tracker drift pretty hard to the right?

One side pulling harder than the other? Spiders messed up? Engaging system malfunctioning?

Thanks in advance! Any ideas would be appreciated.

How much air did you catch when you jumped that ditch?  As in... were you airborne and had a really hard landing on the front suspension?

Does it still clunk when in 4wd?
Reach up and grab the CV shafts and see if either one will move.  They shouldn't.
