I bought my first tracker a few weeks ago. Its a 1990 tin top, auto. Really nice shape. Just hit 80,000 original miles. Just passed safety and emissions today. Then my next goal was to get the AC going. It seems to work but it needs recharged. So I went Autozone where they told me it was too old and needed to be converted to take modern refrigerant. Anybody have any ideas about that? They said that I should research it before i do anything but no google results from what I could find.

The EPA changed some rules over the years on what type of refrigerant is used in the vehicle A/C systems.  If you have the old coolant, you can't get it charged anywhere.  Take it to an automotive garage that does A/C work and they should be able to hook you up. 

Basically, they check for leakage within your A/C system, repair any lines or O rings required to properly seal your system up, then draw out (capture) any remaining old refrigerant in your system and then charge your system with the specified amount of the "new" refrigerant. 

Depending on where you live you may be able to still get it charged with R12. I'm not sure the legality of it but check around to see and you might find a shop in your area that still uses the old stuff.
