What Carb?....Say you....
« on: November 07, 2012, 02:47:26 PM »
I got a '87 Sammi a month ago.  Been working through the systems to see what I got.   I want to use it as a daily driver so 13 MPG isn't good enough for me.  It's pretty much stock, stock, stock.  Previous owner did modify auto choke to manual choke.  I rebuilt the carb, replaced all vacuum lines and found a bad vacuum advance.  Replaced complete distributor with new vacuum advance.  Next problem is the MCSV does not check out.  I'm also not convinced the ECM is working either.  When you check the emissions system and you are supose to get the blinking light, I just get a solid "SENSOR" light.   So between not being able to find parts or the cost of them when I can find them, sounds like it's time to move on.   I am in Central Oregon so no emission checks in this part of the state.  So help me out....What say you is the best alternative for carb replacement?  ???  Weber, Rebuilt stock Hitatchi, Toyo and my-side are the ones I find available in my research.  Want Sammi to run reliably with good gas mileage.  Not a rock crawler.   Was considering a Weber but am leaning to the Toyo conversion.

Thanks Tan Zuk...  I'm just getting ready to jump into my Toyo install.  A couple questions....1. Do you agree with jay woods that the top of the spacer does not need to be modified because the vacuum port is not used?   and 2.  In all of the write ups, I do not see anything (in pictures) about the throttle return spring and bracket.  In the original article, it says to mount the throttle return spring bracket but states that it is not shown because he does not have that part.  Since I got a rebuilt, I do not know what it looks like nor where it goes.  I assume I will have to fabricate something.  The return spring on the throttle shaft seems to be pretty strong but I assume the throttle return spring is in part redundency/helper spring.
Thanks.

1. I put the under cut in the spacer.
2. There is no throttle return spring.
3. I gave you a link in a PM that was supplied on the thread with the pics you are looking for.
4. Yes the throttle bracket will need to be fabricated along with the fuel inlet.

All this is covered in the summmary section of the thread.

When doing any type of modifications to the Zuk . There is always going to be areas that you are going to have freedom to use your fab skills to over come some of the obsticles.

Here is a few pics of what I did to try a give you a better idea. You may have something else that works better for you. That is why there isn't any direct instructions on these obsticles. You will also have to come up with some type of air cleaner.

Just finished installing my Toyo conversion today.  After a few hours, I'm liking it......a lot.  The challenge was the throttle cable fabrication and the fuel fitting.  Found fittings to get to the fuel nipple without having to tap.  Four fittings. Don't like.  Will shorten up the transition from carb to hose.  Issue two is that my throttle bracket was not "sturdy" enough.  I fabricated a brace to hold it in place but will do a new fabrication that is more significant.  Tried to make it out of 18 guage sheet metal but it is not study enough for the long term.  Eveything else went together well.  Fired right up.  Slight adjustment to the air/fuel screw and off I went.  The performance from the Toyo carb confirms that my Sammi carb was on it's last leg.
I just bought tht '87 Sammi a couple months ago and started working through the FSM to assess the condition of the vehicle.  I knew the carb was a big part of the problem.  Started with a carb rebuild, then found out the vacuum advance had a bad diaphram, then tested out  the MCSV and it was bad.  At that point I figured it was time to move on.  Research.....research and then got down to the Weber or Toyo carb choices.  Use car as a DD so mileage on normal highways said I didn't need the more expensive My-Side.  I appreciate the internet and it's access to information.  So now I drive for a few days and I'll check back in with MPG and performance updates.  So far, I think I made a very good choice.
Thanks to Tan Zuk for your input.  Also Ack for keeping the conversion instructions readily available.
