Fusible link to battery is red hot - HELP
« on: November 11, 2012, 06:58:08 AM »
Trying to get this old Samurai back on the road.  There is a fusible link to the battery that gets red hot when you rev the engine.  The link is a green wire and the wire to the loom is much bigger and yellow/tan.  The link wire is cool at idlel but heats up very quickly at higher RPMs.   If I disconnect the wire it kills all the electronics on the car.  I have disconnected all the emissions equipment when I installed a weber kit.  How do I fix this?

Let's trouble shoot! Are you running the stock alternator?Or a GM upgrade?Take the wire off and check for bare wire.Take the alternator off and take it to the part store and have it check.

Stock alternator.  I'll have it checked.  I will only have a good stereo and small amp - do I need a GM alternator?

No you don't need a gm alternator upgrade.Check The wire for bare spots.

Am I looking for bare wire that might be shorting?

The question would be 'shorting' to what?

A short to chassis will blow the fusible link in the blink of an eye - my guess is you have an over charge situation.

Check the alternator output simply by using a multi meter or run of the mill volt meter connected to the battery while running and revving. Or just go to your local Auto Zone and have them do it.
The usual stuff, and 2nd generation Air to liquid intercooled TURBOCHARGER

Good call guys.  Took the alternator to O'reilly's - bad alternator.  $80 for a re-manufactured unit and problem solved.  Thanks to everyone.

I'd replace that fusible link too.
