Carb or Fuel Injection at Altitude?
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:33:48 PM »
Hello All,
I'm new to zuki's but I'm jumping in with both feet.  Just bought an 86' TT without and engine.  I'm thinking 1.6L 16v MFI... I would think FI is better than a Carb at my atlitude in Big Bear Lake 7000+.  What say you?  Thanks for any advice.  I am used to trail riding on my KTM which is carb'd.

Also, what do you recommend for suspension/lift.  Don't want to break the bank.  Thanks a million!

FI will compensate for altitude, carb may need rejetting.

Just curious is baro/MAP set on the fuel injection computer at key on or is it variable. I know with the boats I work on it sets on key on. this would require restarting at extreme altitude changes.  I only have OBD 1 so can't read much.

The automobiles ECU continually updates the baro pressure, a boat only needs that one time as there is virtually zero altitude change when running on water even when running up-stream in a river.

on my 1986 mustang gt it would set it at start and at full throttle only, when I lived in Big Bear it gave me an excuse to clean the plugs once and a while.

OBD1 16V doesn't have a MAP or Baro sensor. OBD2 has a baro sensor and I think a MAP sensor in the US market, as I recall neither are used for fuelling corrections, they are mainly for the EGR.
An OBD1 ECU outputs more live data parameters than a 96/97 does via OBD2 although the OBD1 interface on the 96/97 has much more capability.
On a MAP based system (8V) the baro taken from the MAP at key on and then updated based on maximum or minimum readings, I forget which!

Ok since I haven't unplugged the EGR system and still have it capped then it shouldn't even be an issue until I get around to pulling the intake and clearing the ports. unless there is a magic way to clean 3 of the 4 ports. It leans out #3 at idle and when EGR opens up causing it to miss.

I thought the egr valve was only to operate or open at cruising speeds, you might have a couple of hose's in the wrong place or a bad sensor?
