Clutch adjustment?
« on: April 06, 2004, 04:31:06 PM »
Well I decided to test out my 4WD today since I got the front end rebuilt.  I was testing it to see if I reset the gears and backlash properly, and everything checked out ok.

It was kind of funny.  When I got the lift kit for my truck, my uncle was doubtful that a Tracker was a good platform for an off roader. I insured him that the truck would kick ass, but he just laughed.

Today he saw my truck in action going down this muddy ditch with a bunch of humps and off camber areas.  My truck tackled the obstacles no prob and when the ditch came to an end, I just cranked the wheel and popped out with one tire in the air.  ;D

Haha when I pulled the truck back into the shop he was like "Holy Sh!t that thing kicks |removethispart|@$$!"  I just smiled and nodded.  ;D

Anyhow on with my question...

When I was in the ditch I had to climb over an off camber hump. I was riding the clutch a little to crawl up slowly just incase my truck decided to sun tan it's belly.  ;)  When I got over the hump I smelt something burning underneath the truck.  I got out and saw that there was some smoke blowing out a space between the bell housing and it's sheet metal backing. (the space was created when my pinion mount blew and the U-Joint kissed the housing.)

My uncle told me that it was my clutch burning since I was riding it up the hump.

I've noticed that my clutch has been slipping as of late and will most likely need replacing in the next few months.  My question is, can I adjust the cable to suck some more life out of the clutch?  So it tightens up or something?

YOu should be able to adjust the cable out. The adjustment is behind the pedal linkage.

First off. Ya you can adjust your clutch. Theres a nut on the end of the clutch cable at the fork for the clutch. You can adjust it tell you have 1 1/2 - 2 inch of freeplay at your clutch pedel.

Ya I was the one who installed the cable on the truck. I was just wondering which nuts to adjust.

*Scratches his crotch*

Is it the one by the lever? or the two on the mount further up?

Nah, he's more into race cars.

Him and my cousin build race cars and race them at the track.

Right now he's building a Daytona with a decked out 350 in it.

I'm gonna help do the paint on it with a guy who's gonna teach me all the tricks of custom painting.

It's gonna have red and white wavey checkers on the bottom and pure red on the top.

There's gonna be a Skull with Piston cross bones, ghost printed on the hood.  it should look sweet when it's done

You should adjust the cable down by the bellhousing so you get 1-1.5mm (40-60 thou) of free play at the end of the fork. I have found that it does need to be pretty much spot on. The adjuster at the pedal end is to set up the  1 1/2 to 2" of freeplay at the pedal that Hotrod mentioned

Like stated above.  There should be a little free play in the shift fork the cable conects to.

If there is, there's no need to adjust it.  If there isn't, you could loosen it up untill there is.

Chances are there is enough pedal free play unless the cable was setup to tight when you replaced it. Your clutch and pressureplate may be glazed so you may not ever regain it's full potential.
