Lifting on 35's??

Lifting on 35's??

I am interested in what everyone thinks about tire size. If I should stick with 33's or go a step up to 35's. Just wondering if 35's are to tall? I am really just interested in trails, and snow not rock crawling or extreme mudding.

I've been running 35" for 3 years now and I'm very happy with them. And in my opinion 35s looks awesome on a fullbodied samurai   :)

Clears great with a basic SPOA RUF and some trimming of the body.

I agree, yours does look awesome.


We put 4" angle iron under the door (full length) and bolted it through the body on Drone's SJ.  That stopped the body damage you are getting.  It would blend in with your effective flares.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

Funny how times change... I remember when I 1st wanted to put 34 -35's under mine I heard alot of don't because it'll break comments. Now I'm seeing more and more well built Sammi's runnin larger meats under them.

 I love the look and they wheel just fine if ya keep your wits about ya  ;).

mrhawk this is the 1st time I've seen your ride. I like it! It looks well thought out, tuff and clean... That's the direction I am heading too. slowly but surely...

Yes it appears that one can run larger than expected tires in these rigs.  My nephew put 37's under his
Sami, and it appeared that with his gearing he had power enough to turn them.  After wheeling in Wa. spring weather he went to Moab with us for EJS, and had two good days of wheeling.  Then he bounced climbing a big step on Cliff Hanger while waiting for jeeps on way out - R&P gone.  Two days later Hells Revenge escalator - axle gone.  Next day Moab Rim - R&P gone.  What works on dirt, mud, and wet rocks is too much for Moab slick rock (?) traction.  Be prepared, there is a reason you heard "a lot of don't because it'll break comments", it can.

I see that at least a couple of your group has rear winches, and you have both.  When you go off road, must not be any road?  Nice photo's.  Looks similar to Washington.

Slickrock is a whole other game, I don't think I would go over 31" on pure rocks. But on mixed surfaces with not to much high traction 35:s is fine if you drive with your head and not the right foot. Being light weight is also important to keep brakages to a minumum. You really need to be below 3000lbs with the driver in it.

Most of the people I run with has both front and rear winches. I do compete in challenge type competitions and the rear winch is worth gold.

Yeah BRD HNTR I agree with building it accoding to your wheeling tastes. Whats good for some definately may not apply for others.

In my neck of the woods is creekbeds, logging trails, woods, mud , & water. There are some rocks but I have no interest in tearing my rigs body up in order to say I did that. But, I don't have a problem with those that want to.

That is why I think it is important when someone asks about tires, lifts, gearing, powertrain, what they intend to do with the vehicle and what they want out of it. Different tastes = different builds.

Snow Peak Crawler's taste in build is similar to what mine are. That is 1 of the reason's I replied....  ;)

mrhawk... what size winch is the rear mount? 6K? Did you build a carriage between the frame rails? I like how neat it looks tucked up underneath.

I really like that but don't think I could swing it now without trying to reinvent the wheel. But I might be able to build a slip in reciever carriage for a winch. Not sure how strong they are.... never looked at one.  ???

It's actually a 12k one  :o  It's sitting against the rear crossmember of the frame and mounted in the stock hitch mounts (and some new mounts)

Well, that should be able to pull you out of trouble without to many issues.  Where did you mount the control box?  Did you run wires all the way up the frame or run a second battery in the back somewhere?

Put an albreight relay at the winch in the back, and heavy guage wires to my two yellow optimas in the front.
