88 samurai wont go into gear at all
« on: May 23, 2012, 05:52:29 PM »
So I just got a 88 samurai for my birthday and I bought it broken. It runs perfect but it doesnt move. The gear shift and the transfer case are not stuck but the thing under the transfer case only spins in neutral on the transfer case not in 4l, 4h, etc. I'm very new to working on cars I don't know what's wrong. The guy said it needs a new clutch so I bought one and its on the way. Once it gets here I'm going to try to install it from underneath? If you know what the problem is please tell me or if you know it is the clutch let me know. Thank you and if u have any tips about replacing the clutch it would be greatly appreciated

Does the "thing"  aka drive line turn with power or just when you turn it by hand? Can you shut off the engine and put both the t-case and tranny into gear? if so go into 4lo and first gear push clutch pedal in and start it ease out the clutch and see if it catches.

Here's a couple links that have helped me, hopefully they are allowed.

Clutch replacement will be from underneath, make sure you get pilot bearing with clutch kit and also order a rear main seal (For back of motor which is accessed via clutch assy/flywheel [mark location of flywheel and put back same way] and better to do as a preventative). Could change the seal on your transmission if so inclined.

^thank you. It worked. If someone pushes to get it going it drives

I could be wrong here but that does sound like the clutch is slipping and is not able to grab from start up. I do agree with SineCredulitas though make sure you replace the pilot bearing and the throw-out bearing. If you do decide to do the rear main seal (which is also a good idea) just take your time doing it I found that it was easier for me to remove the oil pan and then the rear main housing/retainer it's more work but it allows you to install the seal out from under your Zuk.

I have not had the pleasure of replacing a clutch in a Samurai but I have read that is easier to lift the engine in order to do so. It was stated that the tranny fights with the mounting cross-member during alignment and doesn't allow sufficient clearance. You might want to research this more prior to beginning the installation. It may prevent you saying alot of %$#&* words.
I know the voices aren't real.... but they have some pretty kewl ideas!!! Tux.....  ;-)
I get my Sammi parts here, and you can too... http://www.mikodaindustries.com/http://stores.ebay.com/sticksnstones4x4samuraiparts

actually I think it's pretty easy to change a clutch on a Zuk. I always totally remove the rear mount from the tranny and the cross member.
