Clutch replacement
« on: June 05, 2012, 06:23:27 AM »
I have a 1988 Samuri and I'm going to be replacing the clutch. My question is it worh buying a dual friction clutch from rocky road out fitters or some place like them, or just getting a stock replacement from NAPA? My Samuri is mostly used as a daily driver and a weekend wheeler. Any thoughts??

Yes. I have put in a couple of petroworks duals and like them allot, the last one cost like 212.00 plus shipping and I installed a new fly wheel for like 109.00 and a silicone rear seal for 35.00 but might of been more, I also picked up the pilot bearing and throw out bearing, they also sell a trans snout the has bronze on it exchange for around 80.00 I think, Have not purchased one yet but should have.

Personally, I would replace it with a napa clutch.  Unless you are hard on the clutch (slip it a lot, or have big tires and did not put in lower gears), then a stock type clutch should hold up fine.

There's 3 choices

1) jobber: cheap but crappy and failure prone
2) aftermarket stuff: pricey, many styles available but many are crap regardless of $, some 'look' really cool though
3) OEM (SGP): pricey, yet consistently top quality

I got 200K Km out of my stock clutch on my new '92 Samurai, the throwout bearing is what eventually went after big
mods, daily driving and serious off road abuse.

OEM is the way to go, 25 years of Suzuki trials, trips and tribulations here in BC amongst all the other old school ZUK diehards makes this a fact.

If you intend to keep the vehicle, do not skimp on the clutch as it's one of the few things that'll totally bite you in the ass.  ;)

(disclaimers and exemptions excluded for obvious reasons)
-black '92 Samurai, bought new
-black '93 Sidekick, tintop

Thanks for the comments, I think I'm going with the stock clutch.

80% of all clutchs manufactured for OEM applications are manufactured by Exedy/Daikin. Centerforce and most aftermarket clutchs also use Exedy/Daikin components for imports, They just use components with different specs from the E/D catalog to get different spring pressures and friction surfaces, they mix and match existing components.

You will more than likely develop issues with the clutch pedal and cables when a stronger pressure plate is used, I had the weld between the pedal and cross shaft fail and have gone thru several cables on my sidekick. Now a stock replacement is installed and everything works fine.
