Oil Leak
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:16:44 AM »
I have a oil leak at the back of the head on my 98 tracker 16V, I have checked were the Dist. meets the housing & there is no leak, it seams to be coming from were the Dist. flange bolts to the head.  My question is can you remove the Dist. flange with out removing the Dist. if you keep the rotor from moving so I don't affect the timing, as I don't have a timing light to check it if I remove the Dist. I know I can mark it but it still should be checked if you do that, also the manual shows what looks like a O-Ring at the back of the head were the flange bolts on does this need to be replaced or just clean & RTV the flange

Yes there is an o-ring. Some peope use RTV instead. I have both and it still leaks.

Time to start over - Anyone got PN's for one or both 16v disty o-rings?

Definitely remove the housing and clean area thoroughly, use O ring and RTV. done that to mine and it hasn't leaked since, 65K.  You may be able to remove the distributor housing without removing the disty, but if you just remove the distributor cap, (mark it's position first) , mark the rotor position with a marker, paint etc, mark the dist position on the housing, and DO NOT move anything while it's apart you should be able to put it back together without any issues.

If you use any RTV to help seal the dist, make sure all traces of oil are removed from both surfaces and you do not start the engine untill the sealant has FULLY CURED. If uncured RTV is exposed to hot/warm oil it will draw the oil in and leak like a sieve every time.

My 16v is due for some topside attention.  The disty leak is on the verge of hemoriging, I haven't checked the valve lash since I put the motor in (a few years ago), and my Alt & P/S drive pulleys are a bit out of whack.  The more parts I can round up ahead of time the less time my DD spends in the garage.  :)

First off, I don't think you can remove the housing without removing the distributor first....because of the way the gears mesh...but I may be wrong on that...never had a good reason to try to remove the housing without removing the distributor first.

There is really no reason to not remove the distributor, before removing the distributor housing, IMO.  The distributor is going to rotate, when you remove the housing anyway.  Then when you go to stick the housing back on, if you don't have the distributor positioned correctly (which you won't know for sure, until you stick the housing on the back of the head), you will have to pull it off and that is going to mess up the RTV that you just carefully put on the back of the head and/or housing.

My suggestion....simply rotate the engine to TDC, check the distributor rotor, to see if it is at TDC on #1 or #4 (depends on where the rotor is pointing).  Make a note of which one it is.  Remove the distributor.  Remove the housing (there are 3 bolts).  Clean the surfaces and oring.  RTV the surfaces and oring.  Stick the housing back onto the head.  Torque the housing bolts.  Let it set for a day or two, so the RTV will cure.  Put a teaspoon or so of clean engine oil into the distributor housing hole.  Reinstall the distributor, so the rotor lines up to where it was before removal.

I called the local Suzuki dealer & got them to deliver the flange & dist. o-rings to me today the Suzuki part # are 33278-85060 for the dist. & 11162-71C10 for the flange.  The flange o-ring is about 2 1/4" in size, does anyone know if this the right size, as it looks a lot larger then is pictured in the manual & I have not removed the flange to see what's there, the dealer said that this is what they show.  Any info on this before I dig in.
