The background of why the head warped. I replaced a 190d thermostat with a 160d one to help keep things cool. Yes it was the cheapest one. I drove a thousand miles and then took a 650 mile one way road trip. A day after the arrival the driver side motor mount sheered and with a messed up RRO passenger side motor mount bracket it screwed up the transmission to transfer case angle. 300 miles on the return to home the 160d thermostat seized close resulting in overheating, a blown head gasket and a warped head. Stranding me in North Platte Nebraska, the trash bag of the Midwest. Once I got home I took apart the transmission and found 4th gear and the rear output shaft bearing destroyed. Got a new transmission, replaced the driver side mount and tweaked the passenger motor mount bracket. 12 miles later and the head gasket seeps oil.
Depending on the condition of the warped head I may just buy another 8v head for 50 bucks.
Are the g series head studs a bad stud to re-use? Should I look into better head studs?
I sure sometimes wish I had just stuck with a simple carb myself heh. Waaay less to worry about in the woods/water. I suppose that feeling will probably change some after the turbo is added.
For what its worth to you, my 16v head was milled .015 if i remember correctly. I also cant remember if it was within the serviceable limit.
Keep us posted
I do plan to use the 16v head I have when work picks up. I plan on keeping the current 8v head in operational condition to keep as a back up. Its got a torc cam and the valves and seats are fresh.
I've been planning on diving into the service manual in hopes for some measurement I can give to the machinist, then he could tell me if he could do it or not.
The ball on this wont get rolling until the 1st of the month. Going on a vacation! Since it is "drive-albe" I wont have news of even the dis-assembly until then. Ill update as I go along, but hopefully its just a boring head disassemble and re-assemble.
Clay the head to get an idea how much room you have left.
Do you know of any reading material on this subject? I google'd for a minute but didn't find anything relevant. I'll look some more.
Thanks,
Parker
