Ring Gear Bolts
« on: May 02, 2004, 11:49:32 PM »
Put a Detroit EZ in the rear of the Sammi. Then got to wondering....should I have used High strength Lock tite instead of the Blue medium strength stuff :-/?  The stuff that was on the bolts from factory was still on the threads (looks like a blue version of that crap on the hinge bolts). Should I not have contaminated the factory stuff and not put anything additional on them??  I'm concerened about the added banging and clanking from the locker.  It's not too late for me to take the ring gear off again, the chunk is still on the bench. What are the opinions out there?

The Blue should be fine as long as you cranked em down good.  Hopefully you have a good impact gun.

"IMPACT GUN"  to but on a ring gear??????  I hope not!!

You should always torque the bolts down with a torque wrench.  Start at about a 1/3 of the torque and go around in a star pattern (unless other wise stated in a manual.  Then fallow their pattern).  Then go up to 2/3's and lastly to the full torque.  And THEN go back and double check it.

As long as you have some type of lock tite on the threads you should be fine.

That's all I use is blue. You really should torque all the bolts though with a torque wrench, not an impact gun. This ensures even pressure distribution of the bolts on the ring gear.
