Loss of power when going uphill
« on: December 09, 2011, 08:57:13 AM »
Hey guys, new to Sammy's and new to the forum, so please bare with me.

I have an 86 Sammy that is stock. It is a ranch vehicle for our place here in Texas. Not looking to jack it up or do any crazy mods on it. My problem is, to cruise around in it or climb a hill, I have to keep it in 4wheel low. If it try to go up, even a simple hill, in 2 wheel drive, it will bog down and sputter and die. I have to drop it into 4wheel low, put it in 1st gear, and keep the RPM's up around 2500 to 3000. It won't even climb in 2nd low. Fuel delivery problem??? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Carl

This is usually the first indication that your fuel filter is becoming clogged. This happens if you live in flat country and first get power loss when climbing high bridges or if you're cruising fine on the interstate and loose power when speeding up to pass. If you're just trying to get home and can't do a repair, a tank of premium Mobil gas will sometimes clean out the filter just enough to let you run better for a little while. Could be a bunch of other things too but changing the filter is the first thing I'd try.

Sounds like a great place to start, I remember when I had a cj 5 that had the same problem! It got to the point where I had to roll down my driveway to the street before it would start. I knew then my lazy but would be replacing the fuel pump that was only 1 year old! Good luck, I hope it is the filter!
