Stock springs vs yj springs whats better?
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:09:57 AM »
So my 87 samurai has a spring under lift kit with the leaf spring and shackles with 31inch tires. All my friends have spoa lifts with stock springs and stock shocks. I am wanting to up grade my lift but not sure what is better stock springs or yj springs. Once that is figured out what do I have to do to the steering to make it right I already have the longer pitman arm?

Don't always do what the cool kids do.  8)

Have you wheeled it much? Does it not do good? Do you have lockers? What do you want to be able to do with it?

You should always think about a "purpose" to the project. It's hard to do, because at a certain point you find yourself changing everything. But if thats the case, you'll find yourself buying all kinds of parts.

Well I use my samurai all ever from mild rock crawling to the desert sand but I have had it for three years and it is not flexible when im in the rocks. It does good but it would be nice to upgrade.

I think ultimately an average SPOA will out flex a SPUA. The additional leverage the SPOA provides on the spring is usually good for flexing. The problem with this is that it can also stress springs.

Also a longer leaf spring will also have more travel then a short spring, thats why everyone goes YJ.....I would gamble if you went with a RUF and SPOA, you would notice a huge improvement. But if you want the best and most documented articulating spring, YJ springs are probably the answer.

Other things like shackles and limiting factors <ie shocks, bumpstops> can effect your flex also.

Thanks for the help I will be leaning toward the yj shortly in future. I bought it witj the spring under and now have added transfer gears and lockers. Now its time for more suspension.
