92 Tracker Starts but won't keep Running ? ? ?
« on: October 16, 2011, 01:25:39 PM »

1992 8V 2 Dr.  5 Spd.

Engine will start and run briefly but won't stay running.

This all began when the timing Belt failed, stripped the teeth off the Belt.
After replacing the Belt it fires and runs for a second or two then quits.
Seems to run OK for the brief moment it does run.  Cranks and starts
fine, just won't stay running.

Have access to an identical '92 Parts Truck and have tried replacing ECM,
Fuel Pump (complete Tank assembly), Main and Fuel Pump Relays.
Both ECM's work in the Parts Truck.
Suspected the Fuel Pump when we added a Gallon of Fuel to the original
Tank in the Truck.  Engine ran longer (one minute or so) but still
eventually quit.  Then went back to firing briefly and quitting.  Changed
complete Tank Assembly from running Parts Truck.  Same condition as
before.

When checked for Spark the engine dies before the Spark fails.  Spark is
present as the engine quits and "winds" down.
Have "jumped" the Fuel Pump Relay (original Tank Assm.) and the Pump
still runs after the Engine fires then dies.
I'm thinking it is not receiving the "Reference Signal" to keep running...
Distributor maybe ? ? ?

Any Suggestions or Leads would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

That is an odd problem, try swapping out the distributor
other than that, sounds like you have done all the right checks

Also check the fuel pressure at the Throttle Body, just in case the filter is plugged somehow

Thanks for the quick responses  Guys...

"Blew" through the Fuel Filter before putting it back in after installing
the donor Fuel Tank Assm.

Really has me "Stumped"...  I don't know what to try next.

Truck belongs to my Friend.  Luckily my Tracker runs like a Top.

Going to go try the Distributor out of the Parts truck in it when he
gets home later.
After that I'm not really sure what to try next...

Thanks.

The only other thing I can think of is the MAP sensor, make sure the hose
is connected to the manifold, my trucklet ran but was rough, but yours might
be stalling out.

The MAP is the little black box with a little rubber hose next to the battery on the firewall

Yes...  I know what you're talking about.

I'll check it out when I go over there later.  Will swap out the one
from the Parts Truck before trying the Distributor.
Luckily there is a complete Parts Truck he has to try the different
Parts.   I've already "liberated" the Headlight Relay and Connector
out of it for my '92 Tracker but other than selling the Hardtop it
was complete and running.

I really appreciate the help...

Back from my Friend's Tracker with some new findings...

Tried swapping the Distributor and MAP Sensor,  No luck.

Have found a few things.   With the Return Line from the Throttle Body
disconnected the Fuel Pump keeps pumping Fuel for seconds after the
Engine quits running.
If I pour small amounts of Fuel into the T/body it keeps running...
Makes me suspect the ECM but have swapped in the ECM from the
running Parts Truck in.  Suspect ECM from Friend's Yellow Tracker
worked in the Parts Truck when tried.
The Injector supplies Fuel for it to start but doesn't continue to cycle ? ? ?

Any other Ideas...  Anyone ? ? ?

Sounds like it is a fuel related issue.  Maybe the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel injector itself?
When you blew through the fuel filter did you back blow it (blow through it opposite of the way fuel normally flows through it)?  If not, try back blowing it.  I've been able to get a "clogged" fuel filter to work for a long time after back blowing it.

Thanks for your input...  Fuel Filter could easily be blown through from the
Feed side.   With the Return Line disconnected at the Throttle Body it
continues to pump Fuel after the Engine stops running.
Something is not telling the Injector to keep supplying Fuel.

Please feel free to keep throwing suggestions out....

Thanks

Pull the injector and check the Ohms with a meter and verify
with the FSM, also check the screen on the side feed for blockage
just because.

Before that pull the vacuum hose off of the MAP and see if it will
keep running, it has to be a simple but confusing problem

We were planning on trying the other Throttle Body.
Certainly seems to keep coming back to the Injector.

Will try unplugging the MAP tomorrow.

Thanks again.

If you think the fuel system is supplying enough pressure, then I'd look at the fuel injector itself.  Like wild said, it could be defective or partially clogged.

Thanks....

We're going to test for fuel Pressure next.  Certainly has Volume but not
so sure as to the Pressure.
Won't  get back on it until tomorrow after work.  Have to take the Girlfriend
out for Dinner tonight.  As the saying goes...  "Happy Wife...  Happy Life."

I got some good Diagnostic Info from someone on an other Forum that we're
going to try.
Just know it's going to be something silly and since I own a '92 Tracker also
it could also happen to mine.  Would be nice to know in case it happens to
mine.
Will post any new developments...

Any and all suggestions are still welcome.

SOLVED ! ! !

My Friend thought it was the ECM before Timing Belt was discovered and "swapped"
out the ECM.  In the process he "pinched" the Tachometer/ECM Reference Wire.
Ran Continuity Test on Noise Suppressor Wire, it showed it "shorted" to Ground.
Luckily it was easy to see.

Thanks to Helpful Forum Members it was fixed.

Thank you...
