Blew up My 88.5 Tintop
« on: October 15, 2011, 03:49:20 PM »

Bought 3 months i cracked a rod in my stock block , sounds like a heli copter with no power , top speed is 10 mph now lol. Anyway a buddy of mine just upgraded to a 1.6L sidekick engine , and the 1.3L he pulled out only has 25k on a rebuild. I just picked it up off him for a 200 friend price.to be safe i ordered new rings , new gasket set , rod and main bearings are going in the bottom end, n im redoing the valve guides in it ,cylinders are being honed, havin the valves re-seated, installing a RV-2 cam.last but not least re-surfacing the head. Next month ill throw a weber on it , but being the bottom end will basically be re-built and the top end has zero problems but ithought id touch it up since id be in the you know. All my suzuki buddys think this will last a long time since were doing everything right , the block i just bought like i said only has 25k miles on it. Only thing that sucks about the situation is i just installed a 4 inch spring over lift with a 1.5 inch shackle lift on it , 31 inch tires, rancho schols , Neon Seats , Rhino lined floor boards , it was lookin nice at the time till the original 275k mile motor gave out. Basic question does this motor seem like a good fairly stock platform? im not interested in speed but more reliability and some weekend off road beatings, i love my suzk and dont wanna get rid of it, k i dont think 500 is to much to get it going. Im hoping with the rebuilt block n touched up head i get atleast 100-150k out of the motor( i baby my zuks when it comes to maintence but i knew my old tired on was getting ready. let me know thanks

What makes you think the rebuild you are going to do on it is any better than the one that was done 25K ago?  Seems like a waste of money on an engine that hasn't got that many miles on it since it was rebuilt.  The stock one lasted 275K.
Suzuki motors will last a long time, if you keep up on the maintenance and don't abuse them.

I am with you.  Sounds like a waste of money.  i would just replace any gaskets that were leaking and stuff it in the car.

I would have checked the compression, and if it was close just dropped it in.  25K has proved the rebuild, and it only takes one small mistake on the rebuild to waste all that work and the last rebuild.  The RV cam is mostly just going to change where the power curve is.

I am with BRD just do a compression test and if it is close to specs, just drop that puppy in, After changing the timing belt.
If you are paranoid you could do leak down test and change the rear engine seals, but that may be over kill.
