HELP!!! I Got Nuthin
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:02:08 AM »
I am in the process of putting back together a 88 Sami that I rescued from a field. It was completely disassembled with all parts including tranny and transfercase and complete engine in back. All has went well till I tried to get power. I am not sure where the two pictured red wires go but when I hook the one with the fuse to the hot I get nothing no lights or anything at all. The other shows to be dead to ground by the meter and shorts off the hot batt terminal. I am pretty sure I have the right wire to the alternator mabe??  I am also not sure if the fuse in the wire is supposed to be the fuseable link or is that somewhere else. This rig has been in a field for 6 years but has had a top and been dry as far as I can tell.  Any help would be great. Thanks  c

Man a voltmeter and FSM (or at least Haynes) go a long way.  I cant specifically help with the pix but....

I racked my brain trying to re-wire my Sami.  I diagnosed everything i could possibly think of to get power working correctly for lights etc.  I forgot I had unhooked a ground wire from batt the chassis.  No wonder I read no voltage at the fuse box with my meter.  Sometimes I forget to start with the easy stuff.

Ive got a Haynes but it does not have a diagram for Samys in it. I checked my ground wires to frame and engine they are good. I have no power to the chassis at all and that's what is befuddling me. I have turned the motor by jumping fire to the solenoid and have a good hot Batt.

Maybe its an older Haynes, mine has it on 12-30.

If you can screwdriver jump the starter and it works, go back a step and confirm 12v going to the ignition switch white/yellow, then to the clutch switch blk/red, then to solenoid as blk/yel.

I have an 87/5speed and i thought the START 12v power came to a blue wire on the pigtail coming from the key switch.

My Haynes says :

wht/yel to ignition switch; then branches to the generator (same color)
in START is a blk/red to clutch switch
from clutch switch a blk/yel to starter solenoid

3 wires relating to generator are:
same wht/yel from branch mentioned above
a blk/wht to distributor
wht/red to insturment panel

What are your wire colors before those non factory splices?  Can you trace them with a voltmeter setting that beeps when you touch the contacts together?  If so you can run a long pigtail to these unknown wires then use the other side of the meter in the fuse box.

Just a shot in the dark.....
From the Pix; The wire with the round "Spade Lug" laying there should go to the Battery Positive
Clamp bolt or the positive cable at the starter "Hot" lead (Bolt).
Usually this is how it is connected if a butt connector is NOT provided at the battery clamp end of a GENERIC replacement Cable
as a fuse - able liink.

Hope it helps.....
