N/A 16v swap, stock ECU or MS while Im at it?
« on: July 08, 2011, 10:49:31 AM »
Finally got the 16v motor out of the junkyard.  I grabbed everything for the swap except the coil and dist. which someone had taken already.  Also snagged the power steering and whole fuel tank. $300.00 total.

I am ready to disect the 1.6  harness to install this into our 87 carbed sami.  After some poking around, I have a good feeling that I may want to turbo this engine at some point down the road.  I have a megasquirt box from a project datsun 280z that never happend.  I have to find it to remember which version (3 i think) i bought years ago.

So here I am at a crossroad.  I havent really found much on if the MS will wire right up to the 1.6 motor (if all sensors are compatible).  Would I need to go forth with the stock wire harness disection as per the 33page manual online? I didn't want to get rid of things MS would need (or keep stuff it doesn't).  The other option I know of is to buy a MS wire harness and work backward from the MS to the motor ...which seems much tougher.

Other question is are the 87' 1.3 carb and 95' 1.6-16v coil/distributors interchangeable?

No, the distributors are not interchangeable.

MegaSquirt will use the MAP only, as far as I know, they didn't support
a MAF which the 16V has, but as far as turbo, the stock ECM seems to
handle the boost just fine, the only advantage, if you want to call it that
would be the ability to tune the MS, and if it is the MS2 it has multiple
tables that also control ignition and has a boost retard also.

The MS will require you to use GM sensors or you will have to use easy therm
to calibrate the table for the coolant and air temp sensors, not that hard, just
something else you have to do to get an accurate injection table

I am at another fork.  I now realize I have a 96' 1.6/auto.  I dug out my megasquirt and its v3.0.  This seems way less difficult and the least expensive option at this point.  I just need to learn what it will take to do the swap.  Cant find much on the MSv3.0 on a 96+ tracker motor.

And you probably won't, you will have to get all the inputs to the MS
and get the Suzuki stuff to work with it, so you have your home work
cut out for you.

MS 3.0 is the latest one from what I remember, unless they released
the Ultra MegaSquirt

Ya the more i research, the more appealing the MS is versus getting the stock ecu worked out.  Would be nice to do a trigger and coil packs and run everything from MS.  I am missing the coil/dizzy at this point anyway.  Just seems like the amount of work is about the same either way I go.  The doors will be left open to expand this motor to turbo down the road.

Thx.  I am exploring dizzy-less possibilities at the moment.  I figure if i have to spend a few bucks on ignition either way, i would like more control if possible.

I will keep the offer in mind!

I'm not sure if MS V3.0 supports distributorless ignition so
look into that before you spend money on stuff you can't use

What I have found is using a Ford EDIS-4 & crank sprocket with a VR sensor and MSII (MSI is upgradable to II).  I probably need to do a build up on this since I really dont see much info available out there.  I just worry I am stacking up complications to gain tunability.  This is okay and my budget says i can do it, I was shooting for a deadline of halloween weekend.  We will see what happens.
