tire scrubbing
« on: April 20, 2011, 12:05:41 PM »
I have a 86 sami with a spoa on 32's.  At hard turns the 32s scrubs the springs. Just wanted know what is the least size wheel spacer do I need, or what kind of back space on rims do I need.  Any advice will be appreciated.

Most people run about 3.5" of backspacing, that seems to work pretty well.  If they are just barely scrubbing you can adjust your steering stops and reduce your turning radius a bit, but it will get rid of your tire scrub.

That is the reason many sammy vendors sell 2.5" back spaced wheels.  So 1.25 " spacers should do the trick. There are no steering stops to adjust.

appreciated guys, the spacer should work.  It is just scrubbing a little at hard sharp turns.

If you think that it is barely scrubbing, then look at placing washers on the studs to build it out a 1/4-1/2" then hold the tire in place if it will no longer bolt on to see if it clears. If that works then you know you can get away with that amount or more, then go out and order your spacers. What ever you do, do not drive with the washers in there. I have heard of guys that only need 1/4" milling out a slip on spacer and then just bolting the wheel over that. I am not a real fan of that idea, but as long as the wheel is tight I guess it would be safe enough.
I'll wheel with anyone, even Jeeps as longs as they can keep up

If you want to go that path I would recommend getting some new wheel studs from the front end of a Geo Tracker.  They are a bit longer then the stock wheel studs on a Samurai.
