Transmission Installation help.... Please!
« on: April 18, 2011, 07:44:38 PM »
Well I replaced the clutch and all the components when i took the tranny out. Now My problem is I cannot get the transmission back in it is being a complete B|removethispart|@#*%! I will slide the tail end of the transmission in and cannot get the front of it in the line up with the transmission there is not enough room, it hits the clutch. Am I doing something wrong here, have any tips that would help me out. It is driving me insane. By the way it has the YJ lift on it with 33s. Any help is appreciated.

This is part of the FUN of putting a clutch in!!
Do you have a "Clutch Disc Alignment Tool"? Available at most parts houses.
This little gizzmo centers the clutch disc on the pilot bearing.
If the disc is off only a little bit, the tranny input shaft can not get into the pilot bearing in the flywheel/crankshaft end.

And this is why when I do any clutch work on my Sammy (and it's coming TOO SOON)
I pull the engine & Tranny as a unit out the front, and change the clutch while its
"Hanging" on the "Cherry Picker" (shop crane/engine hoist). You have SO MUCH MORE ROOM TO WORK.

Best Wishes......P.S.  while out getting a Aligning Tool, pick up a box of "Knuckle Bandages".

You talking about a samurai tranny?  If so, you need to cut or notch the front of the little plate on the crossmember, so the tranny will slide back just that little extra bit, so it will clear the clutch enough for the front to be raised up.  No pics, but it has been discussed, and I think pics posted on zuwharrie and zukikrawlers.

To be honest, I have R&R a samurai tranny without notching the crossmember plate, but it was a PITA.  I haven't had to remove a samurai tranny, since I learned of the crossmember plate mod.  But I will notch the plate, if I ever have to remove one in the future.  Easy to do, doesn't compromise the strength of the crossmember, makes the R&R a lot easier (from what I have read).
