New front wheel bearing. Special tools?
« on: March 18, 2008, 02:21:06 PM »
I need to change a front passenger wheel bearing. I have the parts at home and a lot of tools. But, Is what I had to be in need of special tools? Like very big socket?

Thanx

A good set of snap ring pliers to get that pain in the ass retainer clip off the end of the cv stub shaft. 19mm wrench and socket , 21mm socket also if memory serves me correctly.
Not to bad a job, have done it 3 times already my self.

I bought the special tool to remove the Bearing Lock Washer.  Basically it is a large 4-pin socket.  It seems to be unique to the Vit because it is metric.  But I am sure you could also use a hammer and punch to loosen the bearing lock washer enough to remove by hand.

Opps, sorry. Spuds is right, I used a brass punch myself. I also used some nail polish to mark it to help tighten it to the same spot.

I should have told you to buy the premium bearings from NAPA as they have a life time warranty on them if you show up with the original receipt. I've already got a freebie when one got full of crap wheeling and sounded evil, no questions asked, just "here's your new bearing n-c".

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about...

It wasn't cheap (and the price has increased a few bucks), but this is where I got mine:

From memory, I'm thinking the hub nuts on the 2nd Gens require 155#s of torque to set them.  That's a whole BUNCH of torque on one nut!  Chevy dealers wanted $35 for one of those round bearing lock nuts a few years ago.  Don't know what they are trying to get for them now... but I'm betting it is a few bucks more.  Crazy prices for some of these onesy-twosy parts..  Used ones from a pick-n-pull work just fine and are a lot cheaper.
