engine dies when on the throttle
« on: February 12, 2011, 11:20:30 AM »
i have an 87 samurai with the stock 1.3L, i recently changed the water pump and timing belt. i set the timing and all that so she idles fine but when i step on the gas she hesitates and will sometimes die after that. i read in the haynes manual that it could be a problem with the carb or the fuel system. it has a new fuel filter and mech pump and im getting fuel to the carb. does it need a carb rebuild? or could it be a sticking accelerator pump? or maybe im overlooking something that is simple to fix. just wondering if anyone out there has had the same problem as i am having. any advice or input would be greatly appreciated

Does it stammer every time even after warm up and once it picks up the gas will it accelerate and run then?

yea if i just feather the throttle a little bit it sputters but revs up eventually, but if i just push it down like normal it hesitates and dies.

Sounds like an air leak in the intake system. Check all hoses and vacume lines. It could also be your accellerator pump too. If you can look down the throat of the carb with the intake tube off you should be able to see or at least hear the jet of fuel when you slap the throttle open. The only vehicle I have left with a carb is my old Harley. That and a bicycle with a motor on it so I may be way off here, but a carb is a carb so I hope this helps.
The usual stuff, and 2nd generation Air to liquid intercooled TURBOCHARGER

Did you clean that little screen filter that is before the float bowl inside the carb?
