What year vehicle? 16 valve or 8 valve?

This might sound basic, but are you sure all of the vacuum lines are hooked up correctly? I had EGR issues on my '95 Sidekick (16V), and noticed that one of the vacuum lines had simply fallen off.

On the exhaust side there's a passageway thru the head and cast into the exhaust manifold.  Blow compressed air into both sides of the EGR valve mount opening and see if ift backfeeds (indicating clogged).  As Warn said, check vacuum lines and VSV operation also

Did you have the code cleared, once you did all that?  If not, then it may take awhile for the code to go away on its own.

Yes, there is an EGR passage from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve.  That needs to be cleaned too.  You should be able to clean it by removing the EGR valve, sticking a wire in the hole and working it around until you get the build up broke loose.  You can also use brake cleaner or carb cleaner and compressed air to aid in getting the build up cleaned out of that passage.

You can try it from the EGR valve side.  Then if you think you need to clean it better, you can pull the exhaust manifold.

Every 16v exhaust manifold I've removed had the EGR passageway clogged with carbon.  Just my experience.  BTW, every 16v exhaust manifold I've ever seen was cracked between the 3rd and 4th runner, even if only a barely visible hairline crack.  Anyway, good luck with your project.

when i bought my 98 it had an egr code, previous owner replaced every part on the system, i bought a can of brake clean and a throttle body gasket cleaned the port from the egr tube to the intake manifold and never had a problem, i was stumped at first because it was so clogged that i couldnt even see it from the throttle body side.
