You need an alignment, you should be able to find a shop that can do it for about $50

Did you just get this Sammy? Sounds like it may have a locker in it. Definitely get an alignment though, and don't run it in 4wd on dry pavement!

Or one of the hubs is not working right, not engaging or dis-engaging

Sounds like at least two problems.
Steering:  Check to see if your tie-rod (connecting between both front hubs) is bent.  It can be mostly straightened if proper force is applied.  You can loosen nuts on the adjusters on tie rod and adjust the wheel alignment close by measuring distances between front and back of wheels/tires (from same spot).  They should be almost the same.  Only use home done alignments for off road use. Then as Wild stated get an alignment.

Hopping:  If it is hopping (and popping) when turning sharp in 2WD, and probably clicking when turning in reverse, it sounds like you have a locker in the rear.  This is somewhat normal behavior of lockers.  As light as Sammy's/Kickers are sometimes they hold locked until tires (turning different distances) have built up significant torque in axles against each other in the differential Locker and it unloads (allowing vehicle to lurch forward), where it again starts binding up.  This action is worse in a poorly adjusted differential with too much play.

Loud grinding noise in 4WD:  Need more vehicle information.  Does not sound normal.
