« on: November 29, 2010, 10:17:55 PM »
Hi I'm new to the forum and i just got a 98 sidekick its a 2wd manual transmission, the question is, is it possible to add a transfer case to the existing transmission or do i need a 4wd trans, also did suzuki make a manual 4wd trans for the 98 sidekick 1.6l 16v sohc engine? thanks for any help

I've done it on a 93' not a problem, but I did have to make a mount
for the drivers side, as it was not installed when the frame was built, so
you might want to check and see if you have both side front axle hangers

Keep the auto trans, the computer won't like the swap, and an auto is
much nicer to drive offroad as well as on.

The only thing I can think of is to watch the spline count on the output
of the trans and make sure it matches the t-case, for some reason they
come in 26 spline and a coarse spline of an unknown to me # of splines,
but it is obvious if you see one and then the other you will see the difference

All the other stuff as far as I can remember is the same, cross members and I think
the driveshaft is the same length, but just to make sure get the donor truck drivshaft

I have heard some trucks come with a "dummy" T-case, but it didn't look like a t-case
to me, it's more of a spacer, on the truck I did it looked like a tailshaft housing that
bolted to the back of the trans

Manual or auto trans will make no difference, but in your original post it sounded
like you were looking for a manual trans to replace an existing auto trans.

When you find a donor get the front axle too, but check the ratio carefully to
make sure you get the right one, look up the ratio axle year of truck list here on
the board, it should give you all the details for your truck and the donor truck
and what gears were installed
