locking hub stuck
« on: November 23, 2010, 05:38:37 AM »
just got my aging Sammy back form the son-in-law. He let it sit for a yer and half. Couldn't find the time for it. Right front lockout is stuck in Free position. Undid the bolts and pulled the outer piece off, been soaking for over night in Power Blaster. IF I can't get it to seperate and therefore turn, can I just repale the exterior parts or do I have to go into the inner owrkings? I'm not a mechanic ! thanks.

When you pulled the"outer piece" off, are your talking about just the selector area that came off with the large spring and gear.  Or did your pull the whole hub off from the 12 mm bolts with wedgecones and then separate the the outer piece.

The common problem is that the clutch (the gear part that is connected to the large spring) gets wet and rusts in either the locked or unlock position.  once you can separate the clutch from the body, and the rust isnt too bad, clearn and oil it.

you can search here on how to rebuild these and how to put it back together, its really not too tough.

I had the same problem with my 95 tracker.  If you are finding that there is rust on the spring and gear part that you pulled off, you probably need to pull off and clean the whole locking hub because there is probably going to be rust on the inner portion of the hub too.  I used the same link that tipover mentioned above in his post as my guide.  I'm by no means a mechanic, and i found it to be pretty easy. so easy that i decided to go ahead and take the other side off and clean and grease it as well.  Just remember not to over stuff the hub with grease, because that can make it difficult to turn the hub from free to lock.  Also, i had quite a bit of rust on mine, so i cleaned them well, then cleaned off the remaining rust with naval jelly.

Seems like these hub have a problem keeping water out, from what Ive read, they probably need to be cleaned and greased at least every couple of years.  I guess the use of vehicle would affect the frequency.

also referenced this page.  This goes into changing out the bearings too, which you probably dont need, but gives a pretty good detail on taking off the hub and getting it back on

Thanks for the good info. Yes I had removed the whole thing. Lot of rust and will clean all but I got a set of new-to-me hubs form a dismantled Sammi that are in much better shape and will replace with that. Was never able to free the part that turns to make the hubs locked or free. 23 years in Houston/Galveston area have done the damage. Thanks again for the tips.
