Swapping engines\Ford Ranger 4.0 to Tracker
« on: December 06, 2010, 12:19:52 PM »
Has anyone done a 4.0L swap from a 2000 ford ranger 4 x 4 low miles into a Geo Tracker (2 door tin top) or Zuki Sidekick (4 door) both 4 x 4 auto? fyi - yes I am not the sharpness knife in the drawer on engine swapping.

This would be with the complete wiring harness from the ranger with the automatic trans (2000 ranger).
Items I am still researching-
Where would the shifter end up with the swap in the passenger compartment of the tracker ?

The pressure of the fuel tank/pump ? Might mean changing tanks or fuel pumps.

The engine mount differences ?

The locating of good/proven/tested 1.6 16V Suzuki engines
has been a huge challenge of late. Sure can get them for $1000's of dollars. But that is not the amount I wish to put into the two I have. Both just need 1.6 16V or
a great easy to do swap. I do like the extra horsepower for the 4 door but then not really wanting the drop in miles per gallon.

Best choice for swaps are ? (yes with computer and wiring harness)
4.0 L Ford ?
Vortec ?
2.0 L Suzuki ?

You can also drop in the Ford 2.3 Lima (around 110-120 hp, stock) with ALOT less hassle with everything that is going to be involved. The Ford 4.0 is not really a easy swap, esp. since some of the Rangers came with the stupid PATS setup, and the engine itself is quite a bit larger than the 'zuki V6 even. Have you thought about the trouble with the transfercase drop? You would be better served going with a 2wd tranny and a Sammi case IF you go the Ford route.

My advice is to try and keep them both all Suzuki under the hood... Much less hassle in the long run. Swapping in the 4.0 would be more than double the drivetrain weight and only just slightly more than double the power... Not a good trade off in my opinion... And you will have many drivetrain problems like front diff being on the opposite side you need it, front and rear diffs being way too low geared for that engine, and way too weak for it as well...

I know...Pretty boring... FOR NOW...
