Fender flares with mudflaps on Tracker
« on: November 24, 2010, 05:15:28 PM »
My Trail Tough bumpers are nice but their high-clearance design meant less coverage for road debris.  Here's a bunch of pics of how I did it.  Used some heavy truck mud flap material, Pacer's 52-192 heavy-duty, wire-reinforced 1-3/4" mini-truck flexy fender flares, some reinforced rubber material as my new front fender liners, and for the rear I used some "J" molding like they use to install mirrors in a bathroom and some flat aluminum, all riveted together.  LOTS of short metal screws and flat-washers.

Lined everything up with clothespins:

Hot scratch awl to poke holes:

Bent this tab flat:

Added a bracket here:

Then a heavy mud flap material, level with the bottom of the frame:

Front finished:

Rear:
same 2" spacing of screws on the fender flare.
piece of flat aluminum, with a slight bend at the top where it screws to the metal fender:

"J" molding to hold the flap in place:

Mud flap, like the front, is level with the bottom of the frame.
All riveted together:

Rear finished:

Removable mud flaps:
Used grey PVC pipe and a quick-release pin

Of course, got to represent with the ZW banner!

Thanks for the "How to" for this! It's going to make my trip out to 'zona next summer much easier.

Good Lookin' tintop! Lot of screws though, did you use stainless screws? The first time I installed those flexy fender flares I didn't and the screws all rusted. Went to Fastenall and picked up a bag of 100 ss screws for the same price as you'd pay at HD for a box of 25, no rust and they stay clean.

Thanks, love the tintop...heat AND a/c is very nice.  No, I am a very stainless-steel savvy person, I usually always use them on anything I do...but I didn't have any at the time I started work on this, and had plenty of regular zinc coated steel fasteners.  I could probably go back and replace each screw and washer one at a time.  I don't really have any problems with rust where I live...fortunately they don't salt the roads here in California like they do elsewhere...my Tracker has absolutely no rust on it, and I've searched everywhere for rust and can't find any anywhere...I got lucky when I bought it.  Thanks for the suggestion though, it's actually kind of been bugging me and it's a matter of if/when I get to it...

Yeah, love that  "no rust belt.!" Pretty soon all these Zuks are going to qualify for " classic " status, if we keep 'em alive long enough.

Must be nice to a rust free ride!   :P  My tracker already counts as a classic, seeing as how she/it is a 90, but is soo rusty that it seems like everytime I think about touching it with tools, something decides to break off from the rust.
