Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:05:30 PM »
So I've recently (during the last couple of weeks) been having issues with my Vitara.

It is a 2003 Vitara, 2.0, auto.

When I go to work in the morning, my Vitara does not want to shift out of first gear initially.  Once it revs up to 5000+ rpm it eventually shifts...  much later than normal.  Once it makes that first shift into 2nd gear, it seems to be fine for the remainder of my drive to work (10 min drive), and usually good for the day.

This has caused the check engine light to come on.  I dug up my code reader this evening, and it read code P0722.  After searching for this code on google, it turns out it means "Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal".

Has anyone experienced this before?  I'm wondering if this is a simple unit I can easily swap out myself.  I am no mechanic, but I got some basic tools, and I'm more than willing to give it a shot if this sensor can be easily replaced.

Thanks for any advice or input.

Does it have a speedo cable or just wires?
If it has a cable (2003 I doubt it) there is a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) inside
the instrument cluster, this is common in later OBDII generation Track/Kicks
but your newer model I think might have an electronic sender in the tail section
of the transmission, it could be sending bad info to the ECM

This same thing can happen with wheel speed sensors setting off the ABS light
Dig into some service manuals and see what they say/show the system having
