Power windows/lock problem '96 1.8 'Kick
« on: October 03, 2010, 08:45:15 AM »
1996 Sidekick Sport 1.8 5-speed, 4-door 4x4.

Problem:

The power window and power door lock buttons have stopped working. you cannot work the windows from any door nor can you lock doors/windows from the driver's seat.

I have check all easily-spotted fuses passenger wheel well in the engine compartment and under the dash next to the driver's door.

Is there another fuse location for the power windows?

... Am I looking at a bad ground in the driver's side door?

Sounds like a bad ground.  Is it all the windows/locks or just the drivers side?

Sounds like a bad ground.  Is it all the windows/locks or just the drivers side?

All of 'em.

When I pulled al the fuses one at a time, I noticed a click from the driver's door during one of the fuse swaps.  Nothing came of it though...

I'm thinkin' you are right about the ground.  Furthermore, I think it involves the door/window lock button's ground - the one that prevents the 'lil monsters in the back seat from unlocking the doors or running the windows up and down.  It's the one closest to the B-Piller (or the driver's elbow) on the door panel...

Looks like Thursday before I'll be able to crack the door panel and take a look.  Good thing I have a '96 Tracker FSM...  ;)

If your pulling your door panels off you could try hitting the motors with 12v just for kicks, see if it works.  :)

I took a look at the '96 Tracker FSM and, among other things, I found a refernce to a 50 amp power windows fuse located in "fuse box 2".

I can't seem to find that fuse... I have checked the fusebox under the dash - and around it too - and found nothing that large.  I also checked the fuse box on the pasenger's side wheel well and found nothing that was identified as the power window fuse either.

anypone have a clue as to where this fusebox is located?

I'll check out my FSM and see if I can find it.

Probably the main switch on the driver door that is bad. If it goes out none of the others will work. Atleast that is the case with my sport. Hope this helps.

Thanks, mhunterff49.  I'm starting to think it's what you discovered...

Drone:
I took a look at the '96 Tracker FSM and get the feeling that either it is the window lock switch or something upstream of it on the door side of the breaker - which I found mounted on the side of the main fuse panel!  My breaker showed zero ohms when I measured across it and 12VDC on the hot side of the socket.

The window lock switch is on the 12 volt side of all the window switches.

This does not explain why the door lock switch does not work either...  I think that I'll find that circuit is also on the 12VDC side of the window lock switch.

Curious Update:
Tonight, the POS Sport decided that it would not start at Walgreens!  Interestingly, it had the symptoms of a dead battery (slow brief cranking) but when I installed the fresh battery from my Samurai, the damned thing cranked slowly and briefly with that battery!

Then I stuck the Sport battery in the Samurai and it started up perfectly!

I'm thinking that the engine ground is going bad - which might also have something to do with the power windows not working...

With a little neighborly help, I managed to push-start it.  It started right up, BTW...  Go figure.

I'll launch into it tomorrow after work...

On the upside, I get to scare the crap out of my fellow morning commuter drivers with my "tippy" Samurai   >:D

LOL, well good luck in the morning and have fun scaring them. I agree with your main ground thoughts in light of the new development. Not much more it can be.
