newbe with a couple of questions!!
« on: November 07, 2010, 07:09:29 AM »
My name is Dan I just picked up a sammy to play with and I found this forum. What a great place for info, I have been lurking for a while and it seems like there is some very good people on here. Im sure I will be needing a lot of your guys input.

One of my first questions. Will 215 75 15 tires fit on stock rims?  Does anybody have any pics of some on with no lift ( stock height).  With no rubbing.

I also need to replace the clutch. Should i change the main seal bearing at the same time?

Can I change the pan gasket with the engine still in the car?

Thanks everyone  Dan

Welcome Dan,

215s are 1 or 2 sizes over stock, should fit fine, but is still a small tire.

Do you plan on wheeling this Samurai? or is it a highway transportation
vehicle? I would stay away from bigger tires if you are just using it for
transport, power is an issue on these little trucks.

The rear main seal is not usually a problem on these trucks, but if you
see a little leaking, when the trans is out is a good time to do it.

The pan gasket is a pain to change in the truck, it is best to use
gray silicone for pan gaskets, not the cork type, cork will leak in a
year or less, and the factory uses gray silicone also, just stick with it.

Yes, you can definately fit this tire and any tire up to 235/75/15 on a stock Sammy rim.

Up to you, look it over when you there. Depending on the miles it might be a good precautionary idea.

You can absolutely change the pan gasket in the vehicle. Just make sure you get everything good and clean before and during the job. Follow Wild's advice and you should have No Runs... no Drips... No Errors...

Re the pan; It can be hard to take it all the way off because of the oil pick up tube. With a lift it is easier. You can drop the front  axel by pulling the shackle bolts, swaybar and jacking up the frame. It might be enough just to jack up the frame and let the front end droop. Make sure it's supported well. Be careful not to overtighten the pan bolts also.

I have put clutches in two of my sidekicks and in my opinion I would rather pull the engine than drop the trans.  If your rear main seal and/or pan gasket need replaced you could just pull the motor and do everything in one shot.  I would rather stand up and pull an engine than lie on my back and fight with a floor jack.
