87 sammy rear wheel bearings
« on: September 02, 2010, 05:50:20 PM »
I'm driving home last night and everytime i hit the brakes it starts making a very fast vibration through the transmission and pretty much the entire truck no squealling or any noise. jacked the truck up checked the front because i just replaced the bearings(just in case). no problems there i jacked the back up. with both wheels of the ground and spun each one. there was a ticking noise relative to the speed of the wheel do you think it would be wheel bearings. any advice would be great. oh and parking brake works OK not perfect but pretty good. rear brakes only 3 months old because i thought it would be cool to ebrake and show of and my brake shoes popped out of place witch also causes a ticking noise but different than this one.

i do allot of deeeeep water and the rear end always fills up but i change it with in 20 miles or so.
7 inches of lift spoa and shackles on 32 all terrains nothing extreme.

I had a click in the rear wheel once, that was consistent with wheel speed.  What happened was one of the brake shoes actually popped out of the slot in the end of the wheel cylinder and was hitting the heads of the wheels studs (every time it would hit, it would make a click noise).   I popped the brake shoe back in place, fixed the wheel cylinder and everything was good.
Why don't you just pull the brake drum off and have a look around, might be able to see what the problem is?

I would check your front brakes as well.  I get a slight vibration when breaking due to the front rotors on my Tracker being slightly warped and in need of replacement.

ok so i jacked up the rear of the sammy put the truck in neutral with both of the wheels off the ground i spun the rear wheels and the sound is definetly coming from the differential. what would make a clicking noise out of the diff it still drives. when i was spinning the wheels the driveshaft wasnt spinnin gso i think only the side gears should of been engaged. so hopefully my ring and pinion are ok could it be the side gears chipped ii feel it would be unlikely. maybe the side bearings ok i'll let you guys help im lost.

and do i have to pull the axles to get the rear diff out.

Both wheels off the ground, the wheels should spin in opposite
directions, the only thing turning if the drive shaft doesn't move,
is the spiders, side gears, and bearings, so your noise is from those
parts, so I would guess a chipped side gear or spider missing a tooth

my thoughts to that sucks it happened on my way to work and i haven't been wheeling in 2 months so it was kind of odd for it to go. that's my luck. do i have to pull both axles to remove the diff?

Yes it does, but if you have a broken/damaged side gear you need the couplers also
