87 sammy SPOA vibration
« on: May 21, 2010, 03:58:54 PM »
hey guys. i finished installing my sky SPOA kit. looks great and the kit was very straight foward and simple to install with a welder handy. i also put in built leaf packs with an extra leaf and calmini 2in shackles. i have a wicked vibration in what seems to be the front. the vibration was there befor i installed the shackles and springs. but not befor the SPOA. i did shackles and springs after the SPOA. i made sure the driveshafts were lined up properly with the markings. i only compleatly removed the back dtive shaft. the front was only disconected at the 3rd. im not sure what to do now as i really cant drive it on or off road like this. it feels like its gona shake to pieces.im totally lost. maby i dident tighten the U bolts enuff? eney help is grately appreciated.

I had a vibration start after the spoa and it was my u joints. They were old and binding.

If the 2 halves of the drive shaft are in phase, then you
might need to get a custom CV u-joint shaft to relieve
the binding.

What is the angle like, get a pic and post it here

the angle of the rear drive shaft looks really bad to me way to steep the front looks good . to line up the rear i went with  a dot on the middle of the slip yoke. i did not see the dot on the collar of the shaft its a bit rusted. and now that i look at the shaft agean i dont think i lined it up rite. but i do feel most of the vib from the front of the truck. toyota dtive shafts? are they a little longer and kinda a bolt up and go thing besides the adaptor

At the very least your ears should match.

Yes, that shaft is NOT in phase, pull it out and put the flat ears on the bench
and slip it back together should be better when it's right.

That looks much better, if it still has a vibe, turn the yoke 180*
and try it that way, there are only 2 ways it should be put back
together, and you are in 1 of them now.

If it has a worse vibe in the other position, put it back and if it's
a bother with a vibe, have the shaft balanced, that will fix it for sure

ok so the drive shaft is in. the vibration is still there but not as bad i think. im gona try to rotate it 180 and see what happens. i had to move the truck without the rear driveshaft in so i put it in 4x4 and whoa theres a problum. major shaking in the front and alota clunking that was never there. it only happens in 4x4. when its in 2x4 theres a vibration but 4x4 it rattles to hell and the clunking is very upsetting. what could this be. im totally regreating doing the spoa now i feel like i killed my rig=(  help is needed

Do you get the same vibrations and clunking when in 2x4 with the front hubs locked?

What area of the country are you in?

ok so a few laps around the block with the hubs locked and in 2x4 there is no clunking just the vibration. it seems to lesson up as you go faster over about 25 mph but it is still there.4x4  sounds like theres some issues. the t case and tranny are all topped off same with the difs. would no front shocks cause this problum? i really dont think so just a thaut. it also looks like at full drop the front drive shaft is going to hit the tcase crossmember.id go for a highway drive or a longer one but it is not insured or redgesterd eneymore. im going to try to get nj redgistration for it hahaha. im starting to think the guy that welded the front pads messed them up.but the clunking is unexplaneable and at full right or left turn there is some binging in 4x4.

Messing around with the pinion angle will also create vibrations and wear down the u-joints.

See these pages:

Many (including mytself) have solved the short rear driveshaft problem with a Toyota front Double-cardan driveshaft off smaller solid axle pickups.  Go to http://www.zukikrawlers.com/showthread.php?t=18597 for more info.  The above two links also describe how Double Cardan driveshaft drivelines work.

also, check out this video at Ack's FAQ:

I hope that this helps!
