Need Speed
« on: May 10, 2010, 09:24:42 PM »
Hi, I bought a Suzuki Samurai back in January so far Ive fixed it up quite a bit, fixed all the rust (tared then bed lined the rear, bondoed the outside areas) Painting it is next, I've also dropped a few hundred on small things it needed. This is my daily driver and its stock, engine wise. What do I need to do in order to make it do 80 mph on the interstate without changing the gearing? 60 mph isnt cutting it and it kills my mpg. Please keep in mind this is a daily driver, would a venturi tube improve speed? I'm kind of worried that for this extra 15-20 mph increase in speed will cost me more then I want to spend, is their any cheap mods out there? Thank you EDIT: the tires are 235's

without doing a motor swap, you're simply not going to see 80mph without a constant tail wind.    in mine, pedal to the floorboard I see 75mph in 5th.       if you want faster, a 1.6 motor from a trackick is your best bet, but wont be cheap and will require wire harness modification.

75 would be nice for me, how are you getting it to 75? what mods are in it? Mine will be lucky to hit 65 at the floor

my vote is to save the $$$ and do the engine swap.
The 1.6 16v engine was the engine that should have came in the Samurai from the factory.
Best mod (and most expensive) that was done to mine.
1987 Tintop / 1.6 16V ps & ac / 6.4 t-case Twisted TT / 4.30 R&P Hybrid rear / Double Tough axles / Shrockworks all around / ARB f&r / Mighty Kong & TT full skid / DS disconnect / CV shafts f & r / YJ missing links f & r / Petroworks tintop cage / 15 gal Tank / 31" x 12.50 Pro Comps

If your going to try and make A Sammie go 80 mph cruising speed, you better figure out how to make it handle and stop too! Sounds like a recipe for ending up in the ditch.
The usual stuff, and 2nd generation Air to liquid intercooled TURBOCHARGER

if your sammy has stock tire sizes, and is in good tune, it should be perfectly capable of 75.     do a tuneup. new plugs, wires air filter, etc and see how much better she runs.

but realy, the 1.6 16v should have been the stock motor.  oh well, mine is plenty powerful as it is for what I play in.

Check your compression, get a FSM and make sure the emmisions system is working, Have your cat checked, put smaller size tires back on and fill them up with air, check the timing.............................
That ought to do it , if not only drive down hill ;D
