Auto trans leak risk
« on: May 07, 2010, 08:42:36 PM »
My 3 speed automatic seems to be leaking about 5 ounces of fluid each 250 miles or so.  I keep adding it as needed to keep it in the operating range.  Other than the mess on my garage floor is there a risk to the transmission in doing this?  I've put 4000 miles on the vehicle since last August when I bought it.  It shifts well but it does take a second or two to engage reverse.  I have changed the pan gasket but that didn't solve the issue.

As long as you keep filling it the risk to the trans is minimal, ( but IMO still unacceptable) but your garage floor and the general enviorment is still at risk! you should really try and find the leak and fix it. A lot of the autos leak at the shift mechanism on the passenger side of the trans. Clean the area thouroughly and keep an eye on it.

My 3 speed auto has been leaking it's whole life, I think it's just the way they are.
I have 290,000 miles on mine, and it's never been out of the truck, and It also takes
it's time going into reverse, always has
