1987 Suzuki Samurai idle 3 years. Please help me Zombie-fy my dead car

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me.  I have a 1987 Samurai that has been sitting in our garage for the past two years (it spent one year in the driveway before that  :( which I know was a horrible thing to do, esp to a car I love so much  :'( ) that I have been trying to get running again.  The engine was still running and starting fine when we stopped driving it (bald tires was the reason we stopped).  We were originally going to donate it, which is why it was idle so long.

Anyway, we replaced the battery and most of the gas (although we will probably siphon the gas out once more and put in new gas again to further dilute the old gas), but are wondering what else we could do.  The gas that we removed from the engine was clear, so we're wondering if it's still necessary to replace the fuel filter or anything else in the fuel delivery system.

I'm very new at this, but really want to learn and would appreciate any help anyone is willing to give me.

Suction out the bad old gas from the fuel line from the carb side, then refill the tank,
you might need to change the filter, fuel pump and rebuild the carb, depending on
how it runs after you get it started, then change the oil.

I just got my 86 Samurai running again today it has been sitting outside in my backyard since early 2007. All i did was replace the battery, checked the oil and started it up, took a few cranks to get the fuel flowing to the carb again. good luck with yours.

I would go with a good carb cleaning, maybe rebuild,  absolutely change the oil, oil filter, and coolant,  and give it a general tuneup. 

thats pretty much what I did for mine, and mine was parked for about 4 or 5 years, although it was all inside. 


its also a good idea to check the intake path for rodent nests, they like to live in those sort of spots.    not a whole lot else I can think to suggest.

Mine was sitting 8 years... change fuel filter, buy 2 and get ready to change it again.  Clean out old gas from lines, tank.  spray carb cleaner all over the springs, linkages on the carb.  Take off the inlet where the gas line hooks to the carb and clean out the screen in there.  Fresh gas & sea foam... once you get it running... sea foam the carb.

Wow!  Thank you all so much for the advice.  I wasn't expecting so many helpful suggestions and I'll be putting as many of them to use this weekend as possible.  At the very least I'll be replacing the all of the fluids and changing the filters this weekend.  The carb may have to wait a few more weeks.  I'll update you all on my progress.

Another thing to look at is the distributor cap and rotor. I generally replace mine every 8K or so. Get the cap with the brass electrodes as
they last much longer than the aluminum ones.

Replacing ALL fluids would be a good idea once you get the motor running. Unless the carb is gummed up, if you do all the suggestions,
it should fire right up.

  Pull the coil wire and spin the engine until you have oil pressure. Light off on dash. Then give it spark.  And don't touch that carb unless you absolutly have to!

Would it be best to drain the oil now, while it's all down in the sump from sitting for so long, pour new oil in, then get it all warmed up and change it again?  It seems that since the oil is so old already, why would you want to pump all that oil back up into the top end when one could drain it now and start with fresh oil, then change it again?
It might seem like overkill, but for sitting 3 years it might be a good idea.

I cant see how fresh oil from the initial startup could hurt,  then run it a good 2-4 hours driving and change it again to clean any crap out of the motor.
