this is on the air filter cover on my 87.  whats it called?     I pulled one hose off while removing the carb and the steel nipple decided to stay with the hose.

It is called a "Thermo sensor (valve)" I got that info from the Zuk service Manual here is a link to it

Wait, isn't the function of that valve to open & close the flapper for the (usually long gone) hot air intake?
Don't see many carbed engines that still have them functional, & if yours isn't there's no point in replacing that valve. You could just cap it & the vacuum nipple that feeds it... unless it has some other function?

honestly, I dont even know what the rest of that system LOOKS like, since I'm not super familiar with samurais yet.   if I can just cap it off and be done with it, SUPER.

Well, the hot air intake on sammys used a tube that runs from a T on the intake... one side runs into the fender (main air intake) & the other sorta looks like a clothes dryer vent hose (except ~3" diameter) that ran over to the heat shield on the exhaust manifold. If that tube isn't there then your hot air intake is gone.

I'm not 100% certain that's what that valve does... but I think it is. Here's how to tell: Follow the vacuum lines, one should go to the intake (or carb base) & the other will go to a vacuum valve at the T on the intake tube. If one goes there... then that's what it is. I have a Tracker, not a sammy so I can't just go look, but I've had several carbed vehicles that had a similar setup... & not 1 of them ever had a working hot air intake. Maybe one of the sammy guys will chime in & confirm or correct me.

That is exactly what it does - it senses the intake air temp and uses engine vaccum to open/close a flap in the T in the intake tube.
