Tire Question
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:16:36 AM »
Anyone ever heard of or used " Dean" brand tires? I'm considering moving from my 32x11.5 BFG AT Ko's to a 33x9.5 Dean Mud Terrain. The price sure is right, $100 ea. My BFG's are great tires, ride quality, handling, and off road traction is good in everything except deep snow or mud. I was thinking a slightly narrower tire with a bit more aggressive tread would work better. Opinions? Experience? I know I'm gonna give up some on road comfort with a mud terrian. These are on ebay.

To my recollection Dean is a Cooper brand. There were some law suits concerning certain Cooper/Dean tires, so I guess that puts them in the same league as the rest of the tire mfgr's! My tire guys are always trying to sell me Coopers.

Yea, looks like they were bought by Cooper in 1999 in order to make a premium brand.  :)

You might want to take a look at Maxxis Buckshot mudders. They make some tall profile tires in narrow width. Their tread desgn is pretty aggressive and the wear great.

I know the voices aren't real.... but they have some pretty kewl ideas!!! Tux.....  ;-)

on my quest for tires, it was hard to find that narrow size aggressive mud terrain. The common TSL 32x9.5 was one of the better choices....I'm pretty sure Maxxis stopped making the 33x9.5 or 32x9.5. You could go to a 16" inch wheel and look at 255/85r16....but that would kill any kind of price savings that you may be after.

That Dean tire seems like a good price, but to me its not aggressive like a "mud" tire. Looks more like an AT tire. Maybe that is what you are after. Also I would find it hard to believe the Dean will outperform the BFGoodrich (which is also available in 33x9.5), but I have no personal experience with the Dean.

Sorry if I didnt help completely....I would be interested in a review if you do buy them.

Also here is a pic of the tire you mentioned for future viewers....

Those Dean's don't look much more " aggressive" than my BFG AT's. Maybe the grooves are wider /deeper. I'm thinking a narrower tire may handle a bit better, but that's just a guesstimate.  The Maxxis tires are out of my price range.

Find the tires you want and watch for them on EBay or Craigslist. I just picked up a set of 4 BFG AT's 31 X10.5 that had been on for 2 months for $220.0

The pic I posted of the Buckshots ar for sale there for $200.00 I like them but the are 235 X 9.6 X 16. I could go that way but my main driving will be road miles.

If your not in a hurry the deal will come round......

I've had Cooper tires, sold at Pep Boy's auto supply here in Cal.
I liked them, good price and good wear, they had a BFG Mud
knockoff that was identical, but only in smaller than 33" which
was what I wanted, but the AT tire worked well in the dirt, don't
know if mud would be too much, probably, even the BFG MT tire
loads up worse than a Swamper in the sticky goo.

Watched a friend of mine on Mud tires sliding all over in the clay
south of Beaumont here where I live, tires were packed smooth,
and the Swamper LTBs were leaving the mud back on the ground
and stayed really clear of mud, that design is a tried and true mud
design to get you through the sticky stuff

Thanks for all the tips and opinions guys. It seems like I wouldn't be gaining any traction advantage over my BFG AT's with the Dean/Cooper " Mud" tire. I really don't do mud, not intentionally anyway, so it looks like I may just stick with my 32x11.5's for awhile.
