1988 samurai with no spark need help how to fix it
« on: January 17, 2010, 12:07:18 PM »
I have a 1988 suzuki samurai.  Started it on a cold morning to let i warm up.  It suddenly died.  Now it wont start, no spark from the coil.  It cranks, all dash lights come on, it wont fire.  Pulled the coil wire off the distributor, no spark.  Purchased a new coil, still no spark.  Can anyone help me trouble shoot this thing?

Check the power wire that is connected to the + side of the coil,
if power is there when the ignition is on, replace the distributor, I
think you have a bad pickup, OR check the wire from the distributor
to see if it's attached.

Second thought, Does your truck have EFI or is it still the Carb engine?
if it's an EFI model, you might have a problem in the ECU, tho it's the
fuel injector that stops working on the Sidekicks when the caps repture
and eat the circuit traces

I checked the resistance on the coil.  Positive and negative at coil read 1.9.  I checked the positive on the coil and the wire going to the distributor, it read 10.
It is a carborated engine.  It still wont start and setting in the barn.  Please help.

Does the rotor spin when you crank the engine?

If not, possible broken timing belt.

You have a point Eric, the engine suddenly stopped,
a broken belt is a definite possibility that I didn't think of

Thanks, I will check tonight.
Would that explain no spark?

Ya, the distributor needs to turn to trigger the spark,
the cam distributor drives from the gear on the back of the cam
