Play in the front wheels
« on: January 27, 2010, 06:29:08 PM »
Ok, so my manu hubs work just fine but i noticed sometimes when i brake, i hear a slight grind in the front left wheel. I know its not the brakes because i checked and all seem fine and work fine too. But when its on the hoist, i notice there is a lot of play in all directions! What does this mean? Is there a nut behind the manu locking hub that can be tighten or something? please help!  :o

The bearings are gone, get it fixed before you drive it more

I'm sure someone here can give you more info, but I believe the inner bearings are pressed inside the rotors.  The outer bearings are bigger, and arent pressed in.

While your in there, you might as well change em both.  JMO.

Check both inner and outer, get the bad one, but look for scoring on the
races of the not bad bearings, any pits or score lines on the races means
you should replace that one too.

Small chunks of the bad bearing can work their way into the other bearings
and that starts them failing too.

Pinion bearings are in the diff, not what you need, you need wheel bearings

From what I remember, the inner and outer bearings are the same size.  You need to replace both of them, along with the races.  I would check the other side too, since they could be loose too.  If the other side isn't loose, I would still pull the bearings out, clean them up, repack them and reinstall them.
You might as well replace the inner and outer wheel hub seals (they might call them wheel bearing seals, can't remember).  Anyway, both seals are actually on the backside of the wheel hub, but one goes inside the hub (this one has to be removed, in order to get the inner wheel bearing and race out) and the other seal goes on the outside of the hub.
I would also check the lower ball joint, since you are tore this far into it.  It would be a good time to replace it (them) if needed.  To check the ball joint, you can grab the tire at 12:00 and 6:00 positions and alternate pulling and pushing the top and bottom of the tire, while someone watches the ball joint to see if there is any movement.  If there is any at all, I would replace the ball joint.
