what is the best axles to use?
I have found some yota pick up axles
yota fj55 axles with springs. so far those look like the best deal for my budjet. I know the p/u axles are about an inch narrow, so they would work, but what about the fj55's?
there is also dana 44's and such what is the most popular? and what has the best parts access?

use toyota axels,they are better,you can find lots of parts for it and so....

dana 44 are strong but not like the toy diff and they can andle the abuse af 38 inch tire max,it s not like the toy axels they can be built as strong as a dana 60 with the 35 spline axel,beefier over steering kit,longfield axels,hubs...

plus you have the advantage of the toyota d-shaft that fit the suzuki sidekick t-case bolt patern and they have double joint.

make your home work on your toyota axels and you gonna keep that choise only because they can be bullet proof and you won t have to restarte everything in a couple of time.
two most important things for me :first wheeling as much possible and the second  fly fishing ho! live is goood.

well the guy that has the fj55 axels says there 58 inchs wide. he also has the stock leaf springs that are about46 inchs long that I am thinking of useing.

use the toyota axles X2
they are tough. doesent really matter whick model you go with. THE ONE THING YOU REALLY, SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY NEED TO KEEP IN MIND DURING THE BUILD IS GEARING!!!. AND I REALLY CANNOT EMPHASIZE THAT ENOUGH!!! ;)
i built a trail slayer(kit from trail tough) and the achillies heel is the gearing. the track/kick transmissions are designed for the high ring and pinion gearing in the diffs, therefor to acheive high enough gearing for the larger tires you have to go to the highest gearing avail for the toyota stuff. THE PERFECT OPTION IN MY OPINION....... mate a toyota transmission and trasnfer case to the suzuki engine using a S.O.S ringer(google search) this solves all the problems.... gearing is what was engeneered for the toyota stuff(run comfortably 33-35"tires with no ring and pinion swap), slip yoaks are eliminated, the low range gearing is limitless(4.7 low range gears and the ability to stack transfer cases), and last but not least.... the toyota stuff is tough!
I wish i had thought my project a little more in detail, it would cost me a ton of $$ to go back now!!
good luck with your adventure, a toyota axle'd tracker is bad ass and can be built to drive real nice!

Hey im in Vancouver,WA. Trying to find a decent set of toyo's in the pnw is rather hard. I found 2 sets for 300 - 400 Thats the best i can find. Everyone else wants 400+ for their front axle.....ITS RIDICULES! Gotta keep your eyes peeled on craigslist. On another note im saving still for axles and a motor rebuild found some cores finally and im starting my rebuild. Did you stick with the v6? if you did i dont see any issues with you running 4.88 or 4.10s. But for heavy off road use id prob kick down to the 5.29 R&P. Id stay clear of genuine gears *although a life time warranty* Their rings are welded and weak. Hence the warranty...... But who wants to rebuild their 3rd's every other trip?

Other things to keep in mind on toyota axles:

SFA are from 79-85. 79-81 No gussets. 82-83/84 (early 84's had this some are long) these have short gussets and finally late 84-85 have long gussets from factory.

FJ axles are very nice find since they do run narrows and have the diff housing for E locking. (fj80 - fj 60) *i believe only those 2  models i could be wrong*

Coils are nice but you end up with a bigger project. There are 4 link spread sheets to help with that.

I'm going with leafs with 4/5 leaf packs from a jeep or going the chevy leaf pack rout. We just put some on my roomates 83 toyota and man do they ride nice and flex.

All in all toyota axles are very nice. For a stock sidekick doing a SAS i wouldn't worry about building the axles up too much. the 1.6 cant put out enough power to even rock the stock application of the axles. Only thing i would do is gusset the knuckles and do a rebuild with fresh fluids. Hit it with some paint and WALA! axles that will float over rocks (given the armor)

So if anyone needs a hand on their kicks im more happy to drink your beer.....HAHAHA

well I do have an upper hand. I bought "whiplash" the 95 2dr tracker with a gm v6 and a 700r4. I have been looking for on CL and I haven't seen anything cheap. But there is a couple different sets of yota axles and some sami tcase's. I am thinking putting a sammi tcase with yota axles on leafs, and hopfully stuffing 35 and up tires on it. so the fj60 axles might have more locker options than the fj55?

I know Heather Galvin used FZJ-80 axles on her 4-door kick, with two transfer cases and a 277:1 low-low-first ratio.  That dog is wicked-sick-gnarly.

I made the deal with the fj55 axles because they had 4:10's and the fj60 had 3:70. I think i can get by with the 4:10's even if I am running 39's if I go with the sami tcase. worst case is I will get some lower transfer case gears.

I finally got the axles. the next thing I want is tires and wheels. I don't know what will fit. I am told using yj's 35-37 should fit with little to no trimming. I want to know how yj's comare to fj55's specs.
front: 41'' long x 2 3/4'' wide x top leaf is about a 4'' arch 7 pack and about 1 3/4'' think pack
rear: 48'' long x 2 3/4'' wide x top leaf is almost flat 7 pack at about 1 3/4'' thick pack
does anyone have the dimensions of the yj springs? there is some sami + 2 or +4 springs on CL would those be better?
