Hard top and Bigger Tires?
« on: November 23, 2009, 06:39:18 PM »
Hello to all! I of course, am new to Sidekicks! I just got an 89 two door. I have two fairly basic questions...
1.  I am not shy of trimming a ton of sheetmetal, so could I fit 31's without a lift? I like the low or no lift idea and the look of it. I am not doing any crazy off-roading, mostly snow/mud.
2.  Sounds dumb, but is there anything special you need to do to switch to a hardtop, rather than a softtop? I know where I can get a hardtop for cheap, so I would like the warmth!

Thank you in advance!

The hard top bolts right on.  I think you do have to take off the bar that holds the softop up.  Not a big deal though.  I'm not sure a hard top is any warmer though than a softtop.  The heater on these things rocks and the softtop works well enough to keep the heat in.

The one hardtop I had replace both the spot where the soft-top bar was mounted and the spot in the back where the bar rested on when the top was down with brackets.  It was a pretty easy procedure to swap it out.

For 31" tires you are going to need some trimming or lift, probably a bit of both.  You will also have to notch the back of your wheel wells in ordrer to fit the tires.

Sweet! I may try to get the hardtop I saw for $125! The softop I have is in good shape, but the back corner falls off the lip all the time, I need to research how to fix it, I know I saw it on here....

The tires I will trim to fit, just short of a hole in the cab! Still gotta get em, but thats all the bigger I want...
Thanks again!

No insult to what you like.  but you do know you don't need bigger tires just to do mud and snow?  Actually just cramming them in there even with cutting may actually cause more problems.  You need to have good clearance in the wheel wells to clear mud.

You can get an awesome set of off road m/t or a/t tires in 235/75/15 and not need to cut or lift anything.  And it will still look cool.
